چکیده

A continuum medium approach is proposed to describe the finite size dependent effects for the 1D isotropic Heisenberg ferromagnet. The results are compared to the exact Bethe ansatz solution for the finite chain. The approach is shown to adequately account for the behaviour of the eigenfunctions and eigenenergies. The continuum is obtained by integration in Fourier space via introduction of cut-offs at the integration limits and analytical continuation from the discrete lattice to the continuous medium. It offers a new perspective on the instability of bound states, and reveals the linear behaviour of the amplitude in the critical region and other features of the model in an analytical way. We further apply this approach to investigate the long wavelength expansion of the master equation and to show the route of constructing reliable approximations valid for more complicated models. It is concluded that the approach can be useful to study mesoscopic spin systems. PACS. 75.50.Xx Molecular magnets – 75.30.Ds Spin waves

On the Two-magnon Bound States for the Quantum Heisenberg Chain with Variable Range Exchange

The spectrum of finite-difference two-magnon operator is investigated for quantum S=1/2 chain with variable range exchange of the form h(j − k) ∝ sinh −2 a(j − k). It is found that usual bound state appears for some values of the total pseudomomentum of two magnons as for the Heisenberg chain with nearest-neighbor spin interaction. Besides this state, a new type of bound state with oscillating ...

Chiral Metal as a Heisenberg Ferromagnet

The two-dimensional surface of an integer quantum hall multilayer is mapped onto a Heisenberg spin chain with ferromagnetic coupling. Using this mapping it is shown nonperturbatively that the surface states constitute a very anisotropic metal in the infinite size limit. For multilayers of finite size, two diffusive mesoscopic regimes are identified and the conductance fluctuations are calculate...

The Mass Gap of the Nonlinear σ Model through the Finite Temperature Effective Action

The O(3) nonlinear σ model is studied in the disordered phase, using the techniques of the effective action and finite temperature field theory. The nonlinear constraint is implemented through a Lagrange multiplier. The finite temperature effective potential for this multiplier is calculated at one loop. The existence of a nontrivial minimum for this potential is the signal of a disordered phas...

Raman Scattering from Magnetic Excitations in the Spin Ladder Compounds CaV 2 O 5 and MgV

We present the Raman scattering spectra of CaV 2 O 5 and MgV 2 O 5. Our analysis of the magnetic modes shows that the magnetic ordering in CaV 2 O 5 can be described using two-leg ladder Heisenberg antiferromagnetic model with J /J ⊥ ∼ 0.1, and a small interladder exchange. The spin-gap and exchange constant are estimated to be ∆ s ∼ 400 cm −1 (570 K) and J ⊥ ∼ 640 K. No magnon bound states are...

Having introduced the magnon in part I and the spinon in part II as the relevant quasi-particles for the interpretation of the spectrum of low-lying excitations in the one-dimensional (1D) s=1/2 Heisenberg ferromagnet and antiferromagnet, respectively, we now study the low-lying excitations of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet in a magnetic field and interpret these collective states as composites...
